In a world filled with artists who take themselves too seriously, rocker [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Joe Walsh[/lastfm] has always stood out as the opposite, often poking fun at himself. Walsh celebrated his 64th birthday this past weekend on November 20. After the jump, enjoy some of our favorite Joe Walsh factoids.

– In 1972, Walsh released one of the first songs ever to use the talkbox, “Rocky Mountain Way.” Here’s a vintage concert performance of it from the 1970s.

– Walsh was a noted wild man in the 1970s, allegedly traveling with a chain saw in case he needed to do modifications on his hotel rooms. He’s been sober since 1994, which means more on-the-run remodeling jobs are unlikely to happen. (His 1978 hit “Life’s Been Good” is a snapshot of his wilder days.)

– In 1980, during one of the Eagles’ final tours, Walsh launched a presidential campaign. Among his campaign promises: free gasoline for everyone and “Life’s Been Good” as the new national anthem. Twelve years later, Walsh announced a run for vice president, promising free toilet paper for everyone. He didn’t win either time — and more’s the pity.

– Since 2008, Walsh has been [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ringo Starr[/lastfm]‘s brother-in-law. His wife Marjorie and Ringo’s wife Barbara Bach are sisters.

In 1991, Walsh released the album Ordinary Average Guy. The title song is a fine example of Walsh’s way of never seeming impressed by who he is. Happy birthday, Joe.
