Things got tense between Madonna and Elton John when both had songs nominated for a Golden Globe this year.  Madonna became the winner with Masterpiece from her directorial debut W.E.  But now it’s time for the 2012 Academy Awards.  Will they have the same clash come Oscars night?  Or are either of them even nominated?

Strangely enough, neither Elton John‘s Hello Hello from Gnomeo and Juliet nor Madonna‘s Masterpiece were nominated. BUT…Madonna‘s critically panned film W.E. did pull through with one nomination for Costume Design.  It will be competing against Anonymous, The Artist, Hugo and Jane Eyre, all period pieces.

The Academy’s nominating committee seemed to only think that two original songs were worthy of nominations.  Man or Muppet from The Muppets and Real in Rio from Rio will be the only two competing for the bronze statue.

Man or Muppet

Real in Rio

The Adventures of Tintin (John Williams), The Artist (Ludovic Bource), Hugo (Howard Shore), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Alberto Iglesias) and War Horse (John Williams) are all up for Original Score.

So…if you were looking for more pop diva fireworks at the Oscars, you’ll need to look somewhere else.

What do you think of the two songs that were selected?  Were there any other original songs from this year’s slate of films that YOU think should have been nominated?  Let us know in the comments below.
