Let it never be said that Ohio dairy farmers Richard and David Conrad don’t care for the comfort and happiness of their cows. The owners of Conrad’s Dairy Farm in Wellington, Ohio spent just over $70,000 on the purchase and installation of waterbeds for the cows to enjoy when not on their hooves, and the Conrads say that the investment has been worth every penny.
Now, according to a story in USAToday on the Conrad Dairy Farm, waterbed technology for cows is not new – it “originated in Europe about 15 or 20 years ago and was brought to this country by Dean Throndsen of Wisconsin-based Advanced Comfort Technology.” Check out the video – the cows certainly look happy …
The Conrads insist that the quality of milk produced has improved since installing the waterbeds, and they should be able to pay off the waterbeds’ cost within three years “because of an annual $6,000 savings in the cost of sawdust and a better price for their milk.”
What do you think? Cattle farming wave of the future, or just a needless luxury that consumers end up paying for? Leave us a comment!
