Bruce Springsteen, who has long contributed resources to charities ranging from Amnesty International to veterans’ causes, will be honored as the 2013 MusiCares Foundation Person of the Year in a Grammy-week ceremony.

“Bruce Springsteen is a truly gifted and Renaissance artist of our time, a national treasure, and an exemplary humanitarian,” said Neil Portnow, president of both the MusiCares Foundation and the Recording Academy, in a release.

“His career is a testament to the power of creative excellence, and his contributions as a philanthropist speak to the tenacity of the human spirit. We are privileged and honored to pay tribute to Bruce this year as our MusiCares Person of the Year.”

The Boss, whose music has long reflected his politics, will receive his award on February 8, 2013 as part of MusiCares’ annual benefit dinner, auction and tribute concert. Proceeds from the evening’s activities, which happen two days before the Grammys, fund the foundation’s ongoing efforts to support members of the music community with health and human services programs. MusiCares is the charitable arm of the Recording Academy, which presents the annual Grammy Awards.

Past MusiCares Person of the Year honorees have included Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin and Paul McCartney, who was awarded this year.
