Hard to believe, but the only son of John Lennon and first wife Cynthia, Julian Lennon, turns 50 today.

Even more surprising is the fact that he is now 10 years older than his father was at the time of his death. When John Lennon was killed on December 8, 1980, he had recently turned 40-years-old.

Julian was said to be the inspiration for several Beatles hits including “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “Hey Jude,” and “Good Night.” Paul McCartney famously wrote “Hey Jude” for Julian after John and wife Cynthia split. The song was originally titled “Hey Jules,” but McCartney found Jude easier to sing than Jules and changed the song’s title.

John and Julian had a bumpy relationship, one which was eventually cut short with the death of John.

Julian released his first solo album, Valotte, in 1985. The album was produced by the late Phil Ramone.

In addition to music, Lennon is also an accomplished photographer, finding his love for the medium after shooting half-brother Sean Lennon’s tour in 2007. In 2010, an exhibition of Lennon’s photography, entitled “Timeless: The Photography of Julian Lennon” was put together.

In celebration of his milestone year, Lennon teamed up with Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler for the song “Someday,” which debuts today.
