Today In Music History: 01/03/17

We have some Rock and Roll Hall of Fame birthdays today…..Bass player and keyboardist extraordinaire from Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones is 71 and Stephen Stills is 72.

“The Sounds Of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel was the #1 song on this day in 1966.

In the very next year, claiming he was a conscientious objector, Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys refused to be sworn in after receiving his U.S. Army induction notice. He was deemed a draft dodger and was arrested by the F.B.I. on April 26th in New York, where The Beach Boys were performing. The legal battle went on for over 4 years, with two arrests and a conviction, until September of 1971, when a judge granted Wilson’s request of Community service.

It was on this day in 1970 that Davy Jones left The Monkees.

On this day in 1987, Aretha Franklin, became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Let’s jump to 1992, when Jim Kerr of Simple Minds married actress Patsy Kensit. It was the second marriage for both. They had a son James before divorcing in 1996.

And finally, it as on this day in 2014, that the younger brother of The Everly Brothers, Phil, passed away from COPD at 74.
