The Naked Man Festival is hosted every year in Saidaiji Kannon-in temple in Okayama City in western Japan. During the event, barely clothed men push and shove each other for over an hour in hopes of catching the batons thrown into the crowd by a priest. The lucky few who retrieve the batons are said to be blessed with 12 months of good luck.
The men, dressed in loincloths, purify their bodies with cold water before entering the temple where the ceremony takes place. Once they enter the temple, the lights are turned off and the batons are thrown. Next comes the part of the ceremony where the almost naked men push and jump on each other to try and retrieve the sticks. Only two sticks are thrown and around 10,000 people attend the event, making the odds not very favorable. Seems like Japanese men really have faith in these batons to go through all this trouble.
