Cats May Soon Be Used For Search And Rescue

So when was the last time you read a story about a cat helping a rescue team? I like cats but we all know they are fun because they are so independent and we think they are all pretty like “Garfield” the cat, its all about me!

Well, now researches say hold up there, cats actually may be even better at search and rescue than dogs? Whoa, what? According to a new paper, published in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science, researches say “Cats notoriously turn their noses up to many foods, but this ability to sniff out particular odors holds tremendous potential, according to new research that makes a case for training domestic cats as search and rescue animals.”
Wait, it gets more bizarre! Researches say forget dogs and cats, rats is the new rescue pet! Rats “are already being used to detect landmines, and research is underway to use them to detect tuberculosis. The rodents are also being trained now to be search and rescue animals, with five trained rats acing a test that called for them to locate a human in a simulated collapsed building.”

So while I still believe dog is man’s BFF which is why they are a natural for helping us there’s always room for more, especially if the kitty cat and rat can help us help others. It’s all a win, win! ~grace
