Today In Music History: 03/08/17

Lots of birthdays today. We have Shawn Mullins turning 49, the guy that sang “Cars” Gary Numan, turning 59, former bass player for Poco and The Eagles, Randy Meisner is 71 and Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees is 72.

We start on this day in 1965, when The Beach Boys released “Help Me, Rhonda.”

In 1970, after parting with the Supremes, Diana Ross gave her first solo concert performance at the Monticello Dinner Theater & Night Club.

We jump to this day in 1974, when John Denver recorded “Annie’s Song” and the studio version of “Thank God I’m A Country Boy.” On the radio we always played the live version that was recorded at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A.

One of my favorite bands took a hit on this day in 1983, when singer and guitarist Roger Hodgson, announced he was leaving Supertramp. Back in 2010, his former bandmates went on a 40th Anniversary reunion tour. Hodgson was not invited to join them.

“Beavis and Butthead” premiered on MTV on this day in 1993.

Mike Starr, a founding member of the band Alice in Chains, died of a prescription drug overdose at 44. That happened on this day in 2011.

And it was on this day just last year that we lost the great George Martin. He worked with many artists, but is best remembered as the producer and arranger for The Beatles. He was 90 when he passed away.
