Michael Bland, the man that drums for Soul Asylum, is 48 today. The guy that wrote the song about the horse named “Wildfire,” Michael Martin Murphey, is 72 and the legendary Quincy Jones is 84.

We’re a little thin today in the music history department, so here we go.

Let’s start in 1970, when Mary Ann Ganser of the Shangri-Las died of encephalitis at the age of 22. Some sources claim her cause of death was a drug overdose. If you don’t remember the Shangri-Las, here’s their biggest hit. “Leader Of The Pack.”

On his 47th birthday, this day in 1980, Quincy Jones received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Metallica made their live performance debut on this day in 1982 in Anaheim, California.

About 40,000 people attended “Farm Aid V” at Texas Stadium in Irving on this day in 1992. Performers included Lynyrd Skynyrd, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, and John Mellencamp.

It was on this day in 2011 that the voice behind the Atlanta Rhythm Section, Ronnie Hammond,  died following a heart attack at 60.
