The woman that has had more songs written about her than any other, is turning 73 today. It’s the famous Pattie Boyd. She was the inspiration for “Something,” “Layla,” “Mystifies Me” by Ron Wood (who dated her briefly and had a wife swap with Harrison a couple of occasions) and “Wonderful Tonight,” just to name a few. Also turning 73 today is former Lovin’ Spoonful lead vocalist John Sebastian and Paul Kantner from Jefferson Starship is 76.

It was on this day in 1967, Jimi Hendrix released  “Purple Haze.”

Ringo Starr released “Back Off, Boogaloo,” on this day in 1972.  George Harrison produced the song. It peaked at #2 in the U.K. and #9 over here.

On this day in 1975, it was the lovely Cher on the cover of TIME magazine.

It’s cool to have the most famous group from Ireland get their start on St. Patrick’s Day. It was on this day in 1978, that four high school teenagers who called themselves U2 won the Limerick Civic Week Pop Competition top prize of £500 ($1,000), plus a chance to audition for CBS Ireland the following June.

On this day in 1997, Jermaine Stewart died of AIDS at 39. He was famous for his 80’s song “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off.”

And talk about getting taken to the cleaners. On this day in 2008, a judge in London ordered Paul McCartney to pay Heather Mills $48.6 million to settle their divorce, and  pay an additional $70,000 annually in child support for their 4-year-old daughter, Beatrice.
