Today In Music History: 05/02/17

Happy Birthdays going out to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Lou Gramm, the former lead singer of Foreigner, and Engelbert Humperdinck.

Let’s start on this day in 1965, when it was The Rolling Stones turn to make their second appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

It was on this day in 1972 that Bruce Springsteen auditioned for Columbia Records A&R honcho John Hammond. He was so impressed he immediately arranged a Springsteen performance at the Gaslight Club that evening to share his discovery with fellow label executives.

Eric Clapton recorded “Wonderful Tonight,” on this day in 1977. He wrote the song for his future wife, Pattie Boyd, while waiting for her to get ready to attend Paul and Linda McCartney’s annual Buddy Holly party.

On this day in 1980, Pink Floyd’s  “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II),” with its chorus of kids chanting “We Don’t Need No Education,” and the album it came from, were banned by the South African government. The song became a battle cry in that country against the apartheid regime.

How ’bout some POTUS news. It was on this day in 1997, that Donald Trump and Marla Maples announced their separation. The divorce was finalized in June of 1999.

On this day in 2004, the readers of Total Guitar Magazine, voted Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” as the greatest guitar riff ever. #2 was Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” came in third, followed by Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water.”

And finally, on this day in 2007, 1,876 guitarists gathered in Poland to set a new Guinness World Record by simultaneously performing the Jimi Hendrix song “Hey Joe.”
