Appearing on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Broadway star Patti Lupone had a few things to say about Madonna’s movie career.
Lupone originated the role of Evita Peron in the Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice musical Evita, but it was Madonna who ended up playing the role when the musical was brought to the screen in 1996 by director Alan Parker.
When asked by Cohen what Lupone thought of Madonna’s performance, she said, “I was on the treadmill when MTV used to have videos and I saw, I believe it was “Buenos Aries” (a number from the film), and I thought it was a piece of sh*!”
Lupone then went on to say, “Madonna is a movie killer. She’s dead behind the eyes, she can not act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be in film or on stage. She’s a wonderful performer for what she does, but she is not an actress. Bang!”
Lupone is currently on Broadway starring, alongside Christine Ebersole, in the musical War Paint.
