As I told you almost two weeks ago, American Idol had planned to return to television. ABC bid against the original broadcast channel Fox, as well as NBC for the show’s reboot…and won. According to sources, the plan is to return to the airways in the fall.
Paula Abdul was on AI from the start as an original judge for a 7 year run.
Abdul appeared with Hoda Kotb & Kathie Lee Gifford on TODAY, on Monday May 15th to promote her current tour with New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men. When the topic was brought up about AI, and asked if she’d like to return to the show, she removed herself from consideration saying, she was in no “Rush, Rush” (a reference to one of her songs). She continued, “I had an incredible time on that show and blessed to be part of it from the beginning, but I think they need to do a whole reboot.” Apparently this would include her as well. By the way, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson have already said that they are NOT going to be a part of the new project.
On another front, some are talking about the first AI winner, Kelly Clarkson being considered for judges seat at the table herself.
And what about a host?! In a recent interview Ryan Seacrest mentioned that he’s excited to be on Live with Kelly (and Ryan), but that he would like to return to prime time television, which would open the door for him to be the show’s host for the “reboot.”
Rumors in the industry spread like a Florida wildfire. Seacrest is rumored to be the new (old) host, however, that remains to be seen.
Though some insiders close to the negotiations are saying that the AI job is already Seacrest’s because it was part of a larger deal that included the money he needed to join Kelly and that the AI hosting job is the additional cash to get him onboard to do both jobs.
There’s also speculation that if Seacrest DOES take the job, that the show will HAVE to move from L.A. to New York in order to accommodate his schedule for the Live with Kelly & Ryan show.
Kelly: “Are you going to host it? Please tell me yes.”
Ryan: “Whatever you want. You’re my work wife! I say yes and bow to you,” Seacrest continued,”…I don’t know about that part yet. We haven’t gotten that far. This was news to me last week. I had said at the end of the series, ‘Goodbye for now’ — hoping somewhere it would come back.”
Time will tell. We’ll keep you posted.
