Happy birthday to new mom Janet Jackson, who turns 51 today. Her and her husband have recently decided to split…don’t make me post the video to the song you are thinking of….okay I’m doin’ it.
Today is a HUGE day in music history and it starts on this day in 1966. The Beach Boys release the album “Pet Sounds,” which contains my favorite Beach Boy song ever, “God Only Knows.” Paul McCartney was even quoted as saying “‘God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done.”
On this day in 1969, Pete Townshend of the Who spent a night in a New York City jail and was fined $30 after being charged with assault. Pete had thrown an undercover cop off stage by accident and was promptly arrested.
On this day in 1970 The Jackson 5 released “The Love You Save.”
Paul McCartney released his “McCartney II” album on this day in 1980. That’s the album that features “Comin’ Up,” one of the first songs I ever played on the radio.
On this day in 1983 was the first time Michael Jackson performed the “moonwalk” for a live audience on the T.V. special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever.”
Prince released the single “When Doves Cry,” on this day in 1984.
We jump to 1986, the day “Top Gun,” starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, and Val Kilmer, opened in U.S. and Canadian theaters.
Sammy Davis, Jr. passed away on this day in 1990.
Cher guest-starred on an episode of “Will & Grace,” on this day in 2002.
And finally, on this day in 2010, we lost Ronnie James Dio to stomach cancer. He played with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band Dio. He was 67 when he died.
