On this day in 1964, Ella Fitzgerald became the first artist to have a hit with a Beatles cover when her version of ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ entered the UK chart.

On this day in 1969, The Who released “Tommy,” the first musical work billed as a rock opera.

Elton John released “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy”on this day in 1975. It was the first album to sell a million copies on it’s first day of release and the first to debut at #1, where it stayed for 7 straight weeks. For the record, Elton is Captain Fantastic and Bernie Taupin is the Brown Dirt Cowboy.

On this day in 1979, due to a record company dispute, Tom Petty was forced to file for bankruptcy owing $575,000. A long-running battle with his record company followed.

And finally it was on this day in 1987, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, 12 members of the Doobie Brothers re-formed for a Vietnam Veterans benefit concert that raised $350,000. Two thousand vets attended the show for free.
