Barbie’s Boyfriend Ken Has A New Look

By Paco Lopez

Well, here it is…art imitating life. Barbie, the Mattel doll, has been dating Ken for years. You know Ken…the blonde haired, blue-eyed surfer dude, right?! Wrong!

Things are “a-changing!” Ken has a new look…or is it (plural) – looks.

One of the new Ken dolls is now sporting a “man-bun!” But…WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Ken actually has 15 new looks! It’s the “fashionista line” of Ken that’s completely turned the couple on their proverbial heads.

The NEW (and modern) “Next Gen Ken” includes seven different skin tones, eight hair colors, nine hair styles and three body types.

Out is the plastic molded blonde side part. In are cornrows, buzzed on the sides, and shaggy on top styles.

Along with the new coifs, there are three different bods that the “man with a new plan” is sporting.

Out are the chiseled abs. In are “broad” (no females jokes here y’all) body types, and even the “dad bod,” sporting a few extra pounds in the mid section. The Ken doll’s overhaul also includes “slim” and “original” body types as well as different clothes such as graphic T-shirts, skinny ties and plaid shirts.

Mattel is now all about diversity and inclusion.

Between the seven different skin tones, the hair and body shapes…they seem to be attempting to make anyone, and everyone feel accepted, regardless of what they look like…and isn’t that a GOOD THING?! Yes, it is!

Ken (who’s actually right around my age – 56 to be exact) now has his most dramatic change in nearly three generations.

Last year, Mattel made some MAJOR changes in the Barbie line with “curvy,” “tall,” and “petite” Barbie dolls with seven different skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. You can see the collection here.

Ten of the new dolls were for sale on Mattel’s website as of today, with the other five expected to be released in the upcoming months.

According to the Washington Post, Lisa McKnight, Barbie’s senior vice president and general manager said, “…by continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation.”

She went on to say, “…evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world.”

We all knew it would only be a matter of time before Ken’s changes came along.

Meet the new Barbie and Ken “Krew!”

Too bad Barbie never got to date G.I. Joe…he’d NEVER wear a man bun.
