Today In Music History: 07/07/17

Happy birthday to the richest drummer in the world, Ringo Starr, who is 77 today.

What was Elvis’ first #1 in the U.K.? It happened on this day in 1957, when “All Shook Up” hit the top spot. It stayed there for 7 weeks.

On this day in 1961, the Tokens recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

George Harrison recorded the rhythm track for his new composition “Here Comes the Sun,” on this day in 1969. Paul and Ringo Starr were in the studio, John was still recovering from injuries he suffered in a car accident. The song was completed four days later.

On this day in 1976 “Afternoon Delight” by the Starland Vocal Band was the #1 song.

On this day in 1977, Styx released “The Grand Illusion.” That’s the album that contained maybe their best known song “Come Sail Away.”

Let’s go to 1986. A year after leaving Van Halen, David Lee Roth released his first solo album, “Eat ‘Em and Smile.” My favorite from that album was “Yankee Rose.”

1998…Barenaked Ladies released the album, “Stunt.” That was the one that contained the song “One Week.”

And finally, it was on this day in 2006, that Justin Timberlake brought “SexyBack.” It was Timberlake’s first #1 solo song and stayed at #1 for seven weeks. It also garnered a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
